Many conditions can be treated without surgery, so before recommending that you go the surgical route, Dr. Orlando may opt to treat your condition with one of the following non-surgical methods:

  • Joint and ligament injections such as PRP and stem cell injections,
  • Prescription medications
  • Cold and heat presses
  • Casts, splints and/or braces
  • Physical therapy

For some patients, Dr. Orlando may suggest a minimally-invasive procedure to help reduce or eliminate foot and ankle pain. At Central Coast Arthritis and Orthopedic Specialists, we utilize the latest technology and tools to provide patients the most advanced non-invasive surgical options available.

One example of such a technique is ankle arthroscopy, which utilizes small incisions and a small camera to guide Dr. Orlando as he works to repair your injury. With minimally invasive surgical techniques such as this one, most patients are able to go home the same day the surgery is performed.

At times, foot and ankle pain may require a more extensive surgical procedure to correct the source of pain.

Surgery may be necessary for several reasons, including the removal of foot deformities, like bone spurs or bunions, arthritis problems, reconstruction due to injury, and congenital malformations such as club foot or flat feet. Sometimes, regardless of your age, foot surgery may be the only successful treatment option for certain conditions.

The type of surgery Dr. Orlando will recommend depends on the type of foot condition the patient has. For the removal of a growth, such as a bunion, a bunionectomy is necessary. If the bones in the feet need to be realigned or fused together, a surgical fusion of the foot is needed. For pain or nerve issues, a patient may require surgery in which the tissues surrounding the painful nerve are removed.

Generally, Dr. Orlando will attempt less invasive treatments options before recommending surgery. Surgery is often the last measure taken if other treatments are unsuccessful.
